Perspective Vocabulary
1. One Point Perspective—a scientific way to draw a 3D space on a 2D surface. In this form of perspective, all lines parallel to the line of sight recede to only one vanishing point. All lines perpendicular to the line of sight remain perpendicular.
2.Plane—a flat surface (like a piece of paper, a wall, or the side of a building) 3. Perpendicular—crossing at right angles (or 90o) 4. Parallel—moving in the same direction and never meeting 5. Horizon Line—an imaginary line at eye level (It is usually horizontal or flat.) 6. Vanishing point—an imaginary dot to which lines parallel to the line of sight recede. It sits on the horizon line. 7. Orthogonals—also called vanishing lines, these are lines which are parallel to the line of sight and each other but appear to converge (meet) at the vanishing point 8. Point of view—the angle from which the viewer sees the scene 9. Line of sight—an imaginary line from the point of view (viewer's eye) to the vanishing point |
Here is a helpful link to an over view of one point perspective. Some of the terms it uses are different from our class, but it should serve as a help as they are not much different.
Slide Show
Below is Rafael's fresco The School of Athens. Some of the perspective vocabulary is illustrated in this slide show. Hopefully this will help you better understand the perspective vocabulary.
