History: This painting is based on a shark attack that took place in Havana harbor in 1749. Brook Watson was a 14 year old orphan that was working on his uncle’s trading ship. While swimming alone he suffered two attacks by a single shark. On the first attack the shark bit a chunk from his right leg bellow the calf. On the second attack the shark bit off his foot.
The crew of a small boat fought off the shark and pulled Watson to safety.
His leg was amputated below the knee, but Watson went on to live a successful life even serving a Lord Mayor of London.
This was the first fully documented attack by a shark on a human.
Copley and Brook Watson became friends when Copley moved to London from America in 1774. Watson commissioned Copley to paint the events that happened in 1749.
The figure in the water is based on the statue of the “Borghese Gladiator” by Agasias of Ephesus. Copley was also influenced by the statue of “Laocoon and his Sons”.`

Write down 3 interesting facts from the paragraphs. Cuavet Cave contains the ealliest know cave painting and other evidence of Paleolithic life. It was discovered on December 18th, 1994 and is considered one of the most significant prehistoric art sites. Hundreds of animal paintings have been catalogues featuring at least 13 different species, including some rarely or never found in ice age cave paintings. Rather than only including animals of the hunt, Chauvet Cave has many depictions of predatory animals including, Cave Lions, Panthers, Bears, Owls, Cave Hyenas, and Rhinos.
The artists that created these paintings used techniques not often seen in other cave painting. They scraped the walls clean to give a smoother, lighter surface to work on. They also incised (cut) or etched around the outlines. This creates visual emphasis on some of the animals and allows the torchlight to cast shadows about the edges.
